The November update

Join us as we keep you in the loop with how we are strengthening, empowering and protecting children in need.

It has been a full few months of continued and increased work at Free to Be.

We definitely are not going backwards at this time but moving forwards.

Our team based in Kolkata, and myself, have found many ways to work together to keep the quality and direction of our work on track.

We find ourselves now regularly involved in Zoom calls, WhatsApp chats and emails.

We have also developed new reporting systems that keep us connected, providing regular information on what’s happening on the ground. We’re very grateful for the internet.

Celebrations

India loves to celebrate, and it is definitely the festival season in Kolkata.

Over the past few months we celebrated Independence Day with the delivery of Protection Packs in the community, a special flag hoisting ceremony, and a cultural dance program with community leaders.

On Teacher’s Day we honored those who are continually committed to working with children and their great efforts were acknowledged with heartfelt words of thanks, encouragement and handmade gifts. India loves to celebrate, and it is definitely the festival season in Kolkata.

As a special emphasis on Children’s Day we conducted Leadership Training, developing character and vision. Gifts were presented to each child on the day, both within the communities we work in and within our Residential Care.

This festival season came with a break from online classes and the children we care for engaged in many creative and fun activities, including jewellery making, cooking classes, games and movie nights. It’s our goal to see each child enjoy these special events, making memories and learning valuable lessons that will last a lifetime.

Child protection programs

We have enjoyed an increased involvement and interaction with our District Child Protection Unit who have hosted a number of competitions, workshops, counselling sessions and leadership training for children in need of care and protection. We welcome these continual platforms for greater child-focused protection and empowerment activities.

In addition to this, our Child Counsellor regularly provides awareness sessions with our most recent ones being on the subjects of Covid-19 and Human Trafficking.
